CST Option Selection Form - 2021
Company Profile:
BCIT's Computer Systems Technology (CST) two-year diploma program combines computer systems theory with hands-on practical experience in software development.
The Project:
Project Currently second year option selection is done via a Wordpress survey and it does not allow for much data validation. Here are some common issues:
- students mistyping their student number
- students not supplying a my.bcit.ca email address
- students selecting the same option more than once
- students having to select "Defer" multiple times
The project is to create a website that will provide appropriate validation. It should also be customizable for use in other Departments within BCIT. The output will be an XLSX spreadsheet.
The Design:
Initially, I struggled to come up with a new and improved design. I constantly thought...
"How do I make a form look pretty?"
Upon completion of user testing, I started the prototype on Figma and was able to come up with a design that is simple, clean, and organized. These were my solutions:
- I wanted to keep some separation in the form by dividing it into sections.
- The BCIT website uses photos in their banner. I wanted to keep with the consistency so I added photo to match the theme.
- I kept with the blue and white colour scheme of BCIT.
- By adding the bold numbers in coloured circles, the user is made aware of the importance of each selection.
- I moved the form boxes around to help with the organization and flow.
- I moved the buttons apart from each other so the user doesn't accidentally click the wrong button.
